Welcome

From Michael Hanlon, Editor, Northumberland Scribes Magazine

Once again, we at Scribes are pleased and proud to present another issue of our on-line magazine. This is the third and we still can’t figure out why it takes us so darned long to put it all together. It’s certainly not due to lack of enthusiasm.

Your editor is ferocious in whipping the troops along, accepting no excuses – not sickness, holidays in the sun, sloth or even jail terms. Our managing editor, the devoted Jocelyn MacLean, lies awake staring at the ceiling (we’re told), muttering, running headlines through her head. So distracted is she that Cobourg Police have been alerted to watch for her as she walks from her lakefront mansion to work at the library lest she steps into traffic yet again, perhaps for the final time.

As for our humble scriveners, they too are hollow-eyed, constantly searching for the perfect metaphor, an astonishing apercu, a startling aphorism, even learning how to spell “desiccate” and “Northumberland”.

We hope it has all been worthwhile and you’ll respond with warm emails of encouragement or flowers, invitations to dinner, evenings on your yacht. And let us not forget bequests; bequests are always welcome.

On the other hand, should you find even a slight fault, do not hesitate to let us know. Better still, join us and see us reduced to tears. We meet at Cobourg Public Library on the first Monday of each month, starting at6.30 p.m., and the third Wednesday of each month, starting at 2 p.m.

  1. I’ve read many of the stories and have:
.felt a little chill at the back of my neck ( Sharp’s story on the odd, cold light)
.had a good, out-loud chortle at several of the stories by the WIT’s!
.wanted to make sure to take a trip down a Northumberland side road to catch a big armful of lilac blossoms
.had my breath taken away by the companion photo to the article… the shot of the butterfly in the bush

The list goes on. What a great production by a number of very accomplished writers. Thank you for sharing your stories! Thank you for encouraging them Michael.

  2. Way to go Scribes! I knew you could do it :) Keep those pens moving and the words flowing. I miss you all!

  3. Looking forward to the summer issue.
